Name: Pinus strobus - Tsuga canadensis Forest Alliance
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: These northern coniferous forests occur in southeastern and south-central Canada south to Wisconsin and east to northern New Jersey. These mesic northern coniferous forests are characterized by abundant Pinus strobus and Tsuga canadensis. Other conifers such as Picea rubens or Abies balsamea occur at the northern edge of the range of this group; hardwoods such as Acer saccharum, Betula alleghaniensis, Betula lenta and Betula papyrifera are frequent canopy associates, but are never codominant. Common shrubs include Acer spicatum, Acer pensylvanicum, Hamamelis virginiana, Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides, and Vaccinium myrtilloides. Herbaceous species are generally few and characterized by northern or cool climates and may include Clintonia borealis, Cornus canadensis, Eurybia macrophylla, Maianthemum canadense, Oclemena acuminata, and Trientalis borealis.. The bryophyte layer is often well-developed and characterized by Dicranum spp. and Leucobryum glaucum. The environmental setting is generally dry to slightly mesic, usually acidic and nutrient-poor sites.
