Name:
Pinus echinata - Quercus stellata - Quercus marilandica Piedmont Woodland Alliance
Reference:
NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description:
This alliance is found in the Piedmont of the southeastern United States, from North Carolina to Georgia and includes Piedmont woodlands that are found on upper slopes, often west-facing, with extreme exposures that result in extreme xeric conditions. The substrate in typical examples is very rocky; some examples occur on soils derived from mafic rock (for example metavolcanics of the Carolina Slate Belt). Canopies are dominated by some combination of Pinus echinata, Quercus stellata, Quercus marilandica, and Quercus montana. Other characteristic tree species include Carya tomentosa, Carya carolinae-septentrionalis, Diospyros virginiana, Fraxinus americana, Liquidambar styraciflua, Pinus virginiana, and Quercus velutina. There is typically a subcanopy composed of Nyssa sylvatica, Oxydendrum arboreum, Quercus alba, Quercus coccinea var. coccinea, and Quercus velutina. Shrub species include Ceanothus americanus, Cercis canadensis var. canadensis, Cornus florida, Rhus copallinum, Rhus glabra, Vaccinium arboreum, Vaccinium pallidum, Vaccinium tenellum, and Viburnum rufidulum. Typical grasses and forbs include Andropogon gyrans var. gyrans, Aureolaria pedicularia var. pedicularia, Clitoria mariana, Conyza canadensis, Cunila origanoides, Dichanthelium commutatum, Dichanthelium depauperatum, Helianthus divaricatus, Helianthus schweinitzii, Phaseolus polystachios, Scleria triglomerata, Solidago nemoralis var. nemoralis, Solidago odora var. odora, Sorghastrum nutans, Symphyotrichum dumosum var. dumosum, and Symphyotrichum patens var. patens. Among these, Carya carolinae-septentrionalis, Cercis canadensis var. canadensis, Fraxinus americana, Vaccinium arboreum, and Viburnum rufidulum are common in occurrences found on mafic rock.
