Name: Pinus rigida - Pinus virginiana - Quercus marilandica Serpentine Woodland Alliance Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019 Description: These pine-oak woodlands of Pennsylvania and Maryland are dominated by some combination of <i>Pinus rigida</i> and <i>Pinus virginiana</i>, typically with hardwoods as additional components of the canopy and understory. <i>Quercus marilandica</i> and <i>Quercus stellata</i> are characteristic, in contrast to other <i>Pinus rigida</i> communities. <i>Juniperus virginiana</i> may be prominent in some examples. The shrub layer may be dominated by an impenetrable tangle of <i>Smilax glauca</i> and <i>Smilax rotundifolia</i> if fire has been absent for many years. Stands are subject to successional changes in the absence of fire. Under these conditions, the overstory may become densely dominated by <i>Pinus virginiana</i> and <i>Acer rubrum</i>, and the presence of light-demanding, substrate-specific herbs may be diminished or eliminated. This vegetation of is associated with soils derived from weathered serpentine bedrock.
