NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description:
These mixed evergreen-deciduous forests and woodlands from the lower elevation Appalachians of Maryland and West Virginia, and the Piedmont fall-line of the District of Columbia, are dominated by Pinus virginiana usually with Juniperus virginiana present to codominant in some strata. The associated species are an unusual mix of xerophytic and flood-tolerant species. Canopy trees may also include Acer rubrum, Betula nigra, Carya glabra, Nyssa sylvatica, Pinus rigida, Platanus occidentalis, Quercus montana, and Quercus stellata. Other trees that are common in the subcanopy include Carpinus caroliniana ssp. virginiana, Chionanthus virginicus, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Oxydendrum arboreum, and Tsuga canadensis. Examples are known from bands along and within narrow gorges of rivers, located at constrictions associated with rapids and bends, as well as exposed, xeric outcrops and rocky deposition bars. Most known sites occur in positions with high solar exposures. Substrates include bedrock, boulder, cobble, and sand. Soils are acidic, well-drained sand to sandy loam. The canopy is usually stunted, and flood-battered, often severely, with 30 to 70% cover.
