Description: This alliance encompasses swamp forests dominated by <i>Picea rubens</i>, or codominated by <i>Abies balsamea, Betula alleghaniensis</i>, or <i>Tsuga canadensis</i>, with a shrub layer characterized by <i>Hypericum densiflorum, Ilex montana, Rhododendron maximum, Sorbus americana, Vaccinium myrtilloides</i>, and <i>Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides</i>. The vegetation occurs at high elevations of the Central Appalachians and High Alleghany Plateau, on sloping valleys, headwaters, or poorly drained flats.
