Name: Dasiphora fruticosa - Myrica gale - Trichophorum alpinum Alkaline Shrub Fen Alliance
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This rich shrub fen alliance is found across the eastern boreal regions of Canada and the adjacent United States. It is dominated by low shrubs, sometimes with greater than 60% cover. Graminoids less than 1 m tall and mosses make up the remainder of the vegetation. The most abundant shrubs are Myrica gale, Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda, and sometimes Salix spp. or Thuja occidentalis. Chamaedaphne calyculata is typically uncommon to absent. Typical herbaceous species include Calamagrostis canadensis, Carex aquatilis, Carex lasiocarpa, and Carex rostrata. Brown mosses and Sphagnum spp. are common in the peat layer. Stands occur on raised "strings" on minerotrophic patterned peatlands, as well as localized areas associated with discharge of rich groundwater.
