Name: Stuckenia pectinata - Zannichellia palustris - Ceratophyllum demersum Freshwater Subtidal Marsh Alliance
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This alliance represents tidal marsh vegetation containing a predominance of aquatic vascular plants such as Ceratophyllum demersum, Stuckenia pectinata, and Zannichellia palustris. Other species include Elodea nuttallii, Heteranthera dubia, Potamogeton perfoliatus, Utricularia macrorhiza, Vallisneria americana, and occasionally Ruppia maritima as salinity begins to increase. Additional species include Lemna spp., Spirodela polyrrhiza, Utricularia purpurea, and Wolffiella gladiata. Communities in this alliance occur in shallow subtidal fresh to oligohaline water and sediments exposed only at extreme low tide in maritime coastal areas from Virginia north to Connecticut and in Louisiana and possibly Texas. This alliance occurs in lunar-tidal and wind-tidally flooded submergent wetlands of fresh to oligohaline rivershores, river basin guts and large pools. This community also occurs in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana.
