Name: Californian Acidic Graminoid Fen Alliance
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This alliance consists of herbaceous acidic fens dominated by Carex aquatilis, Carex lenticularis, Carex utriculata, Darlingtonia californica, and/or Schoenoplectus species. Other characteristic plant species present may include Carex californica, Deschampsia cespitosa, Drosera rotundifolia, Eleocharis quinqueflora, and Calliscirpus criniger. Shrubs and stunted trees may be present, but these with <25% cover. This alliance occurs at low to moderate elevations (0-1400 m) in extreme southern Oregon and throughout northern California, in regions of heavy precipitation (100-250 cm/year) and/or groundwater seepage. These sites remain moist or wet throughout the year and may have substantial Sphagnum accumulation. They are seeps or fens maintained by groundwater discharge. These wetlands have organic soil of peat at least 30 cm thick, with soil/water pH of <5.5. Soils are highly acidic and often composed of ultrabasic parent materials. The acidity and nutrient-poor substrates produce severe nitrogen-deficiency which favors insectivorous plants.
