Description:
Stands of this southeastern bottomland forest alliance are dominated by <i>Liquidambar styraciflua</i> with or without some combination of <i>Fraxinus pennsylvanica</i> and <i>Acer rubrum</i> as codominants. Some examples will contain <i>Liriodendron tulipifera, Ulmus americana</i>, or other mesic hardwoods. Canopy and subcanopy associates vary with geography and substrate, but may include <i>Acer floridanum, Aesculus sylvatica, Betula nigra, Carpinus caroliniana ssp. caroliniana, Carya cordiformis, Cornus florida, Fagus grandifolia, Fraxinus americana, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Juglans nigra, Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana, Morus rubra var. rubra, Nyssa sylvatica, Ostrya virginiana, Oxydendrum arboreum, Pinus echinata, Platanus occidentalis, Prunus serotina var. serotina, Quercus alba, Quercus nigra, Ulmus alata</i>, and <i>Ulmus rubra</i>. Longer hydroperiod examples will probably contain <i>Fraxinus pennsylvanica</i>, along with <i>Cornus foemina, Planera aquatica, Quercus lyrata, Quercus palustris, Quercus phellos</i>, and <i>Salix nigra</i>. This alliance includes communities of a range of hydrologies, from temporarily flooded to seasonally flooded, found in the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains from Virginia to Georgia and west to Arkansas and possibly Louisiana, and north in the interior to the Ouachita Mountains and Ozarks of Arkansas.
