Description: This alliance, found in the northwestern Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, contains <i>Pinus resinosa</i> and <i>Pinus strobus</i> forests on dry-mesic to mesic sites. Sites occur either on well-drained upper slopes and broad ridgetops, or somewhat moist sandy sites. Occasionally <i>Picea mariana</i> or <i>Picea glauca</i> are present. In somewhat more mesic conditions, <i>Abies balsamea</i> and <i>Acer rubrum</i> are present, especially in the understory. Shrubs include <i>Acer spicatum, Vaccinium angustifolium</i>, and <i>Vaccinium myrtilloides</i>.
