Description:
The vegetation of this alliance occurs in a variety of flat, wet habitats in the Atlantic Coastal Plain from Maryland to Georgia, possibly extending into Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. Stands are primarily oak-dominated, and canopy components may include <i>Quercus laurifolia, Quercus michauxii, Quercus nigra, Quercus pagoda, Quercus phellos, Quercus similis</i>, and <i>Quercus virginiana</i>, with <i>Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Nyssa biflora, Pinus glabra</i>, and <i>Ulmus americana</i>. In addition, <i>Acer rubrum, Liquidambar styraciflua</i>, and <i>Pinus taeda</i> are often abundant in stands affected by timber removal or other soil disturbance. Shrub and understory species include <i>Clethra alnifolia, Crataegus aestivalis, Crataegus crus-galli, Crataegus marshallii, Diospyros virginiana, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Ilex verticillata, Morella cerifera, Rhododendron viscosum, Sabal minor, Sabal palmetto, Vaccinium formosum, Vaccinium fuscatum, Vaccinium elliottii, Vaccinium virgatum, Viburnum dentatum</i>, and <i>Viburnum nudum</i>. Woody vines may be prominent. The herbaceous layer may be dense with grass and sedge species such as <i>Chasmanthium laxum, Chasmanthium nitidum, Carex cherokeensis, Carex debilis var. debilis, Carex intumescens, Carex lonchocarpa, Carex seorsa, Dichanthelium aciculare, Dichanthelium commutatum, Rhynchospora caduca, Rhynchospora inexpansa, Scleria oligantha</i>, and <i>Scleria triglomerata</i>. Ferns may also be prominent, with scattered colonies and individuals of <i>Osmunda cinnamomea, Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis, Woodwardia areolata</i>, and <i>Woodwardia virginica</i>.
