Name: Eschscholzia californica - Lupinus nanus Dry Meadow Alliance
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This dry meadow alliance forms an open herbaceous layer. The dominant herb is Eschscholzia californica (annual or perennial forms) or other annual Eschscholzia species such as Eschscholzia lemmonii or Eschscholzia caespitosa. Other companion species include Amsinckia menziesii, Avena barbata, Carpobrotus chilensis, Castilleja exserta, Chaenactis glabriuscula, Hirschfeldia incana, Hypochaeris radicata, Lasthenia californica, Lotus unifoliolatus, Lupinus bicolor, Lupinus nanus, and other Lupinus spp. Associated emergent shrubs with sparse cover include Coreopsis gigantea and Isocoma menziesii. The shrub layer (if present) is open and the tree layer is absent. Perennial and annual stands tend to re-appear in the same locations with annual rains and generally occur on dry rocky slopes. The soils are mostly well-drained sands and are derived from many substances including serpentine. Stands of these dry meadows are known throughout central and southern California interior foothills and valleys.
