Name: Quercus dumosa - Quercus pacifica Maritime Chaparral Alliance
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: On the Channel Islands, Quercus pacifica forms stands within maritime chaparral with an open to continuous shrub layer. Shrub cover ranges from 7-75% and the herbaceous layer is sparse to intermittent. Dominant and characteristic shrubs include Quercus pacifica and those that are often present include Artemisia californica, Baccharis pilularis, and Heteromeles arbutifolia. Herbs often present include Avena spp. and Bromus diandrus and commonly associated nonvascular plants include lichens. The alliance occurs on Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa Islands. On the mainland, stands of Quercus dumosa are primarily restricted to the fog belt of the southern California coast and northern Baja California, on sandy soils, up to 200 m in elevation, where it occurs on bluffs, headlands and hillsides, and is generally not more than 4 km from the ocean. This shrubland is characterized by an intermittent to continuous canopy of the diagnostic and dominant Quercus dumosa. Subdominant shrubs include Adenostoma fasciculatum, Cneoridium dumosum, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Lotus scoparius, Malosma laurina, Rhus integrifolia, Salvia mellifera, and Xylococcus bicolor. Shrubs are <3 m, and the herbaceous layer is variable. The alliance is found on all slope positions with no aspect preference. Soils are derived primarily from sandstone and other sedimentary rock with soil textures being variable. Elevations range from approximately 30 to 430 m.
