Description: This macrogroup corresponds to the savanna types occurring in the north of the Congo Basin and on to Western Africa, within an annual precipitation range from 800-1500 mm; the dry season lasts several months and the mean annual temperature is 26-29°C. The types vary from very open to more closed woodlands and shorter bushlands. Among the dominant woody species are <i>Anogeissus leiocarpus</i> and <i>Anogeissus</i> spp., accompanied by <i>Acacia</i> spp., <i>Balanites aegyptiacus, Combretum glutinosum, Commiphora africana, Prosopis africana, Tamarindus indica</i>, and <i>Ziziphus mucronata</i> (White 1983). Wetter woodlands, usually distributed to the south of the range of this type, include <i>Afzelia africana, Burkea africana, Combretum</i> spp., and <i>Terminalia</i> spp. and <i>Isoberlinia</i> woodland. The most common grass genus is <i>Hyparrhenia</i>, which grows very tall.
