Description: These open arid shrublands have scattered trees, sometimes widely scattered, and a low-shrub layer; the grass layer varies from scarce to more continuous. They are distributed in the northwest of South Africa and into Namibia and Botswana and are always found growing on eolian sands of the Kalahari forming undulating dunes, about 3-8 m above the plains. Usually the grasses occupy the crest of dunes while the shrubs are in the slopes and taller trees in the interdunes. The altitudinal range is from 800-1200 m, and the mean annual precipitation ranges from 120-300 mm falling in summer and autumn; winter is very dry and frequently with frost. The only species of tall tree is Acacia erioloba; low trees are Acacia mellifera ssp. detinens and Boscia albitrunca, and shrubs are Grewia flava, Acacia haematoxylon, Rhigozum trichotomum, Rhus tenuinervis, and Requienia sphaerosperma. Graminoids include Aristida meridionalis, Eragrostis lehmaniana, Stipagrostis amabilis, Stipagrostis ciliata, Stipagrostis obtusa, and Stipagrostis uniplumis.
