Name: Kalahari Camel Thorn Woodland & Savanna Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: These open dry savannas vary in structure, from types with well-developed tree, shrub and graminoid layers to types with an open low-shrub layer and open grass layer. The distribution of the different plant communities is correlated with the soils, which in the broad Kalahari area tend to be sandy, but have different depths and water-retention capacity. The savannas of this macrogroup occur on well-drained sandy soils, on calcareous shallow ones and also on deep red soils with a slightly higher clay content. The type is distributed extensively in northern South Africa and well into Botswana and Namibia, between 1000-1500 m altitude and with mean annual rainfall of 200-500 mm, falling in summer and autumn. These are mostly open savannas with Acacia erioloba as the only tall tree species; low trees and shrub species include Acacia karroo, Acacia tortilis, ssp. heteracantha, Acacia caffra, Acacia mellifera, Acacia hebeclada ssp. hebeclada, Rhus lancea, Ziziphus mucronata, Diospyros lycioides, Grewia flava, Grewia retinervis, and Tarchonanthus camphoratus. Succulent shrubs inlcude Aloe hereroensis, Lycium cinereum, Crassula nudicaulis, and Kalanchoe paniculata.
