Name: Afro-Alpine Moorland Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: The macrogroup encompass the montane grasslands and moorland above the montane forests (Afromontane center of endemism of White (1983)) which have a scattered distribution in all of the tropical mountains of Africa, between 2000 and 3500 m elevation. The Ethiopian Highlands form the largest continuous area of this altitude in the whole continent, and share a similar flora and fauna of other mountainous regions of Eastern Africa separated by the Great Rift Valley, i.e., the Eastern Arc and Southern Rift and the Albertine Rift. Along with these massifs there are volcanic mountains that share similar ecosystems. Vegetation is characterized by tussock grasses, giant rosettes and species of Ericaceae, including Erica arborea, Erica tenuipilosa, Erica crimera, Erica excelsia, plus Euphorbia dumales, Rubus vulgansi, Alchemilla agrophylla, and many others, including several endemic genera.
