Description:
Dry highveld grasslands are found in the extensive Central Plateau of South Africa. The topography is flat to undulating with occasional small mountains. The rainfall gradient goes from east to west, and the dry grasslands prevail in the western region of the plateau, where annual rainfall is <600 mm and falls in the summer. The elevation ranges from 1200 to 1600 m. Several of the vegetation communities include shrubby karroid components. Main grasses are Themeda triandra, Tetrachne dregei, Aristida canescens, Aristida congesta, Cymbopogon, Digitaria, Eragrostis, and Elionurus. The karroid shrubs are Rhus dregeana, Rhus erosa, Lycium cinereum, Pentzia globosa, Amphiglossa triflora, Felicia muricata, Gnidia polycephala, and Nenax microphylla. Among the succulent herbs are Tripteris aghillana, Senecio radicans, Crassula nudicaulis, Crassula lanceolata, Aloe grandidentata, Avonia ustulata, and Duvalia corderoyi. Some types include a tree component of Acacia erioloba, Acacia karroo, Acacia caffra, Celtis africana, Rhus lancea, and shrubs Euclea undulata and Zanthoxylum capense.
