Description:
The moist or mesic highveld grassland is found mainly in the moist regions of the highlands, extending as far as the Northern Escarpment. The dominant grasslands are of the sour type, "andropogonoid" grasses. The woody component occurs generally associated witih rock outcrops. This vegetation occupies an elevation gradient from 700 to 2000 m. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 600-1200 mm and mainly peaks in summer. The topography includes high-altitude plateaus, undulating plains, mountain peaks and slopes, hills and deep valleys. Vegetation is usually a short dense grassland and sometimes a tall and tufted grassland. Common grass species are <i>Eragrostis curvula, Themeda triandra, Eragrostis plana, Elionurus muticus, Aristida congesta, Aristida junciformis, Brachiaria serrata</i>, and <i>Cymbopogon pospischilii</i>. Woody species are <i>Kiggelaria africana, Cussonia paniculata, Diospyros austro-africana, Buddleja salviifolia, Euclea crispa, Euclea undulata, Protea caffra ssp. caffra, Protea welwitschii</i>, and <i>Rhus</i> spp. Herbs include <i>Berkheya setifera, Pelargonium luridum, Chamaecrista mimosoides, Cissus diversilobata, Dicoma zeyheri, Ipomoea oblongata, Acalypha glandulifolia, Acalypha peduncularis</i>, and <i>Gerbera viridifolia</i>.
