Name: Guineo-Congolian Semi-Deciduous Rainforest Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: Closed semi-deciduous forest communities that are characterized by a high percentage of deciduous species in the upper stratum, mixed with evergreen species. This forest type occurs in West Africa and towards the transition to the woodland formations surrounding the Congo Basin. A type of forest in this macrogroup is the "sparse or open forest" which has widely spaced trees and a dense herb layer of Marantaceae and Zingiberaceae. This type presents different degrees of canopy closeness; characteristic species are Haumania liebrechtsiana, Megaphrynium spp., and Aframomum spp. Other important large trees species are Erythrophleum suaveolens, Lophira alata, Entandrophragma candollei, Piptadeniastrum africanum, Pentaclethra macrophylla, Annonidium mannii, Mitragyna ciliata, and Millettia laurentii. Among small trees are Isolona hexaloba, Chaetocarpus africanus, Santiria trimera, Strombosia pustula, Pausinystalia macrophylla, and Camptostyles mannii.
