Name: Central Indian Ocean Coastal Forest Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This macrogroup corresponds to the coastal evergreen to semi-evergreen forest of the Swahilian regional center of endemism (sensu Clarke 1998), distributed between a few outliers in southern Somalia and more continuous coastal strips in Kenya, down to southern Tanzania. The climate is warm with a dry season and extreme inter-annual variability in the amount of rain. There are many tree species in these forests, with the dominant species changing markedly among forest patches. Some of the more abundant trees are Afzelia quanzensis, Scorodophloeus fischeri, Dialium holtzii, Hymenaea verrucosa, Millettia struhlmannii, Berlinia orientalis, Cynometra spp., and Xylia africana. Lianas are also common, as are shrubs, herbs, grasses, sedges, ferns, and epiphytes. From the Gendagenda hills in Tanzania are found Craibia brevicaudata, Combretum schumannii, Lecaniodiscus fraxinifolius, Manilkara sulcata, Diospyros brucei, Scorodophloeus fischeri, and Sterculia appendiculata.
