Name: Southern African Scarp Forest Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: Evergreen subtropical forest with most of the precipitation occurring in the summer, around 1040 mm mean annual rainfall. This macrogroup shows a large latitudinal distribution from possibly Mozambique south to the Kei River in the Transkei coast. Biogeographically the link is with the Tongaland-Pondoland regional mosaic, since this macrogroup forms part of the coastal forests region. Forests in this group occur from 50-600 m elevation, often on rock outcrops and steep scarps with nutrient-poor and shallow soils. However, it reaches 15-25 m in height and has multiple strata. Characteristic tree species are Buxus macowanii, Buxus natalensis, Drypetes gerrardii, Englerophytum natalense, Heywoodia lucens, Memecylon natalense, Millettia grandis, Oricia bachmannii, Rinorea angustifolia, and Umtiza listeriana.
