Name: Southern Mistbelt Forest Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: Afrotemperate forest macrogroup of the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa, distributed on the south- and southeast-facing slopes of the Great Escarpment, and further north, between the Northern Mistbelt forests and the Scarop forests. Their altitudinal range is 850-1600 m. The forest communities are mostly tall (<20 m) and with multiple strata growing on deep, rich, loamy soils, while the ones in the lower scarps are shorter forests due to the shallower soils. Dominant tree species are Afrocarpus falcatus, Apodytes dimidiata, Celtis africana, Chionanthus foveolatus, Chionanthus peglerae, Cunonia capensis, Curtisia dentata, Kiggelaria africana, Podocarpus henkelii, Rapanea melanophloeos, Rhus chirindensis, and many others.
