Name: Baikiaea Woodland & Savanna Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This is another vegetation type linked to deep Kalahari sands of eolian origin. It occurs south of the Miombo woodlands in Angola, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe and consists of communities of dry deciduous Baikiaea plurijuga-dominated forest and more open woodlands and thicket. The mean annual precipitation is 400-600 mm, with a maximum of 800 mm to the north. The most economically important species of this woodland are Baikiaea plurijuga, Guibourtia coleosperma, and the ubiquitous Pterocarpus angolensis. There are other accompanying tree species such as Brachystegia spiciformis and Burkea africana that are often associated with this woodland. In mature forests, Baikiaea is the sole dominant in the canopy reaching up to 20 m tall, with a dense and shrubby lower story of Combretum engleri, Pteleopsis anisoptera, Pterocarpus antunesii, Guibourtia coleosperma, Dialium engleranum, Strychnos spp., Parinari curatellifolia, Ochna pulchra, Baphia massaiensis ssp. obovata, Diplorhynchus condylocarpon, Terminalia brachystemma, Burkea africana, Copaifera baumiana, and Bauhinia petersiana ssp. macrantha (= Bauhinia petersiana ssp. serpae).
