Name: Albany Subtropical Thicket Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This macrogroup belongs to the dry tropical forest and woodland formation because it is found in semi-arid areas of South Africa (200-950 mm mean annual aseasonal rainfall), with plant communities of a transitional biogeographic origin between the Nama Karoo and the subtropical regions of the eastern coast. It is distributed in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces and comprises a wide range of physiognomies, from tall, dense thickets formed by trees and shrubs, with many succulent and thorny species, and even lianas in the understory, to low thickets dominated by succulents. The height, density of woody and succulent species, as well as the phenology and type of leaves are very variable across the communities belonging to this macrogroup. Characteristic genera are Euclea, Rhus, Portulacaria, Euphorbia, Grewia, Gymnosporia, Sideroxylon, Athanasia, Aloe, Cussonia, Maytenus, Pappea, Schotia, Olea, Crassula, and Pelargonium.
