Description: This type of forest occurs in the Kwa Zulu-Natal province of South Africa and extends north into Mozambique. It grows on arenosols and regosols that have developed on ancient mega-dune systems, mostly on the crests and slopes. It forms the core of the Maputaland Regional Center of Endemism. The vegetation communities are short (5-6 m) to tall (<15 m) forests with a well-developed canopy and shrub layer and sparse ground layer. The dominant trees are <i>Cleistanthuis schlechteri, Dialium schlechteri, Newtonia hildebrandtii, Guibourtia conjugata, Baphia massaiensis, Afzelia quanzensis, Balamites maughamii, Pteleopsis myrtifolia, Drypetes arguta, Hyperacanthus microphyllus</i>, and <i>Erythrophleum lasianthum</i> (Van Rensburg et al. 2000), and shrub genera are <i>Croton, Cola, Pteleopsis, Psydrax</i>, and <i>Drypetes</i>.
