Name: Zambezian Cryptosepalum Dry Forest Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This macrogroup is classified within the tropical dry forest in spite of being characterized by the evergreen Cryptosepalum exfoliatum ssp. pseudotaxus and presented as a transition type between the evergreen Guineo-Congolian forest and the Zambezian woodlands. It occurs on a deep sand substrate and experiences two dry seasons; annual rainfall averages 800-1200 mm. Guibourtia coleosperma is often codominant. Towards central Barotseland, Brachystegia spiciformis, Brachystegia longifolia, and Colophospermum mopane become more frequent (Wild and Barbosa 1967). Other tall canopy trees include Brachystegia floribunda, Syzygium guineense ssp. afromontanum, Bersama abyssinica, Erythrophleum africanum, and Combretum elaeagnoides (Werger and Coetzee 1978). The understory is often dense and tangled, and dominant liana species include Combretum microphyllum, Uvaria angolensis, Artabotrys monteiroae, Landolphia sp., and Diospyros undabunda.
