Name: Richtersveld Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This macrogroup corresponds to the driest type of succulent karoo because of its adjacency to the Namib and Gariep deserts, which lay to the north and west. The vegetation communities develop on the Richtersveld mountains which comprise a varied sequence of pre-Gondwanan rocks, extensively intruded by granite and gneiss. The diverse substrates and the orientation of the mountains for intercepting moisture may explain the high levels of succulent plant diversity and endemism. The elevation gradient goes from 150 to 1200 m, and mean annual precipitation is around 100 mm, with unimodal winter rainfall. Vegetation types are mainly succulent, short shrublands and are often sparse. Some of the important species and genera are Aloe dichotoma, Aloe pillansii, Aloe pearsonii, Aloe microstigma, Stoeberia utilis, Stoeberia beetzii, Zygophyllum spp., Ruschia senaria, Brownanthus pseudoschlichtianus, Galenia africana, Euphorbia decusata, Pelargonium alternans, Pelargonium desertorum, Sarcostemma vimminale, Stoeberia frutescens, Ursinia sp., and many others.
