Name: Eastern African Semi-Desert Scrub Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: The macrogroup represents plant communities belonging to the semi-arid bushlands and thickets dominated by tree species of deciduous genera Acacia and Commiphora, where the understory consists of shrubby herbs less than 1 m high, such as Acalypha, Barleria, and Aerva. At lower elevations where rainfall is less consistent, vegetation becomes semi-desert scrubland and Acacia and Commiphora are joined by succulents of Euphorbia and Aloe, as well as grasses Dactyloctenium aegyptium and Panicum turgidum, among others. Across its distribution, the macrogroup occurs where mean annual precipitation is 100-500 mm. Following the aridity gradient, the macrogroup also includes arid shrublands/grasslands that extend inland from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Oman coasts, stretching from the Sudanese-Eritrean border, south through Ethiopia to Djibouti and northern parts of Kenya, and eastward into Somalia. Shrublands of Acacia mellifera and Rhigozum somalense dominate the basaltic lavafields, while scattered Acacia tortilis, Acacia nubica, and Balanites racemosa can be found in the sandy plains. Stands of Hyphaene thebaica occur in depressions and along wadis. In terms of elevation, while most is distributed between sea level and 800 m, there are hills up to 1300 m.
