NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description:
One of the Nama-Karoo floristic region macrogroups, it corresponds to the northwest portion of the distribution of the region in South Africa and extends to southern Namibia. The landscape, geology and soils of its distribution range are quite complex and varied; there are plains with hills and low mountains, with outcrops originating different substrates. The altitudinal range is 400-1500 m, and the climate is arid with only 90-160 mm annual rainfall in late summer and very unpredictable from year to year. The vegetation corresponds to short open shrublands, dwarf-shrublands and grasslands, dense or sparse, often with a large proportion of bare soil. Small tree species include Aloe dichotoma, Acacia mellifera, Boscia albitrunca, Boscia foetida, Commiphora gracilifrondosa, Ficus cordata, Pappea capensis, and Rhus populifolia. Shrub species are Aptosimum spinescens, Aptosimum marlothii, Blepharis mitrata, Cadaba aphylla, Ehretia rigida, Hermannia spp., Parkinsonia africana, Pentzia spinescens, and Zygophyllum microphyllum. Succulent shrubs include Hoodia gordonii, Kleinia longiflora, Lycium bosciifolium, Salsola tuberculata, Salsola rabieana, and graminoids include Aristida adscensionis, Aristida congesta, Eragrostis nindensis, Eragrostis spp., Schmidtia kalahariensis, Stipagrostis ciliata, and Stipagrostis obtusa.
