Description: The southernmost part of the Namib Desert extends along the coastline of Namibia from the Kuiseb River to the town of Luderitz. It receives only 5-85 mm annual winter rainfall along its coastal-inland gradient, and the rain is highly unpredictable. The presence of fog has an inverse gradient with more days with fog cover along the coast, and less days further inland. The most important feature of the Southern Namib is the lack of surface water between its south and north limits. The Southern Namib is an expansive area of large, shifting dunes, almost devoid of vegetation. The few species known to sparsely vegetate the dunes are the perennial grasses Stipagrostis sabulicola and Stipagrostis gonostachys, as well as Monsonia ignorata and the succulent Trianthema hereroensis. These perennial plants are found dotted on the lower slopes of the dunes and have adapted to the constantly shifting sands. Hummocks are formed between these sand dunes and the coast. These are formed by the nara plant, the pencil plant (Arthraerua leubnitziae), and the dollar plant (Zygophyllum stapfii).
