Description:
Amazon forests distributed in the south and south-central parts of the Amazon Basin, including the basins of the Purus, Madeira, Tapajos, Xingu Iriri, Araguaia and Tocantins rivers in Brazil, and in Bolivia the Mamore river basin. In general these forests are subjected to a seasonal climate, with total precipitation and the length of the dry season enough to show semi-deciduous forests, of lower stature and biomass than the Amazon rainforests, especially towards the southeastern part of the region. While the central western forests are more similar to those of the southwest Amazon region, with Bertholletia excelsa as a dominant species. Both forests show variants with either a more open physiognomy with a predominance of woody lianas, or forests clearly dominated by the palm Orbignya barbosiana (= Attalea speciosa). Characteristic species of the semi-deciduous forest are Geissospermum sericeum, Cenostigma macrophyllum, Physocalymma scaberrimum, Lafoensia pacari, Magonia glabrescens, Sterculia striata, Vochysia haenkeana, Vochysia pyramidata, Gustavia augusta, Swartzia polyphylla, Hyeronima alchorneoides, Protium heptaphyllum, Orbignya barbosiana, Cecropia concolor, Spondias mombin. In the "liana forest" Apuleia molaris, Bagassa guianensis, Caryocar villosum, Hymenaea parvifolia, Tetragastris altissima, Astronium graveolens, Astronium lecointei, Apuleia leiocarpa var. molaris, Sapium marmieri, Acacia polyphylla, Bertholletia excelsa, Swietenia macrophylla, Cenostigma tocantinum, Ziziphus itacaiunensis, Bauhinia bombaciflora, Zollernia paraensis, and Cordia goeldiana are common.
