Name: Colombian-Venezuelan Freshwater Marsh, Wet Meadow & Shrubland Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: The macrogroup includes palustrine herbaceous and shrubland communities occurring in different hydrogeomorphologic situations in the floodplains of rivers of the Caribbean basin of Colombia and Venezuela. These areas have seasonal climate, and mean annual precipitation is over 2200 mm with a long wet season (6-7 months); the mean temperature is above 25°C. The main type of wetlands correspond to permanently to semi permanently inundated depressions where emergent marshes develop fed by streams overflow, seepage and groundwater. Characteristic species include Maranta arundinacea, Anthurium semani, Typha domingensis, and associated trees/shrubs Trema integerrima, Callophylum maria, Samanea saman, Pterocarpus officinalis, Erythrina fusca (= Erythrina glauca), Annona glabra. The communities vary according to a zonation relative to the hydrology, as well as depending on the water composition.
