Name: Magellanian Subantarctic Shrubland & Grassland Macrogroup
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: Grasslands and shrublands of the southern tip of South America and also present in the north half of Tierra del Fuego dominated by the bunchgrass Festuca gracillima. In the southern tip of the continent Festuca gracillima tends to occupy locations of relatively moister conditions due to topography, where it alternates with Poa rigidifolia, Rytidosperma virescens, and Nassauvia darwinii. In Tierra del Fuego it is accompanied by Chiliotrichum diffusum which forms an open shrubland 0.5-0.6 m high, and Empetrum eamesii (= Empetrum rubrum), Gamochaeta nivalis, Baccharis magellanica, where this community forms a mosaic with dwarf forests of Nothofagus antarctica.
