Description:
Plant communities of the northern Andes in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador, growing above 3800-4000 m elevation on slopes or on slightly undulated terrain commonly corresponding to glacial valleys or moraines, in humid to very humid climate. These are open shrublands up to 1 m high, with a lower layer of grassland formed by rhizomatous, tussock grasses and associated pulvinate plants. Characteristic species are <i>Agrostis araucana, Agrostis</i> spp., <i>Carex pichinchensis, Deyeuxia recta, Festuca breviaristata, Festuca dolichophylla, Lachemilla nivalis, Werneria humilis, Luzula racemosa, Lachemilla pinnata</i>, and <i>Acaulimalva purdiei</i>. Among accompanying shrubs, which can also occur forming open shrublands alternating with patches of bare rocky soils, are <i>Chuquiraga jussieui, Loricaria ferruginea, Loricaria colombiana, Arcytophyllum nitidum, Brachyotum strigosum, Gaylussacia buxifolia, Hypericum laricifolium, Diplostephium</i> spp., <i>Lachemilla nivalis, Lupinus microphyllus, Pernettya prostrata, Pernettya hirta, Vaccinium</i> spp., <i>Senecio canescens, Senecio comosus</i>, and cushion-forming plants <i>Valeriana pilosa, Valeriana plantaginea, Calandrinia acaulis, Arenaria</i> spp., <i>Werneria</i> spp., <i>Pentacalia gelida, Aciachne flagellifera, Aciachne pulvinata, Azorella</i> spp., <i>Draba</i> spp., and <i>Astragalus geminiflorus</i>. In Venezuela and Colombia subshrubs of <i>Cospeletia lutescens, Espeletia moritziana, Espeletia semiglobulata</i>, and <i>Coespeletia timotensis</i> are common.
