This association is defined from the Santa Monica Mountains region. It is likely to be extremely widespread throughout cismontane California. This herbaceous association occurs on gentle to steep often northwest- or southwest-facing slopes at low elevations between 165 and 268 m. <i>Avena fatua</i> is characteristically abundant in the herbaceous layer, and <i>Bromus diandrus</i> and <i>Brassica nigra</i> are often present. <i>Lotus scoparius, Baccharis pilularis</i>, and <i>Artemisia californica</i> are sometimes found in the shrub layer at low cover, and <i>Quercus agrifolia</i> is infrequently in the tree layer at low cover. |

This tropical hammock type occurs in the southern coastal portions of Everglades National Park. <i>Swietenia mahagoni, Piscidia piscipula</i>, and <i>Colubrina arborescens</i> are prominent components of the canopy. This hammock type occurs on ridges of shoreline- or storm-deposited marl and/or sand. Hammocks further inland (and north) replace <i>Swietenia</i> with <i>Lysiloma</i> to some extent. |

This association is only sampled from the Santa Monica Mountains region. However, it is anecdotally known from much of cismontane California This herbaceous association occurs on gentle to very steep slopes of variable aspect at low elevations between 37 and 495 m. It is codominated by <i>Bromus diandrus</i> and <i>Brassica nigra</i> in the herbaceous layer. <i>Malosma laurina, Hazardia squarrosa, Artemisia californica</i>, and <i>Salvia leucophylla</i> are sometimes found in the shrub layer at low cover, and <i>Quercus lobata, Quercus agrifolia, Juglans californica</i>, and <i>Pinus</i> spp. are infrequently found in the tree layer at low cover. |

This woodland association occurs on somewhat steep to steep slopes with variable aspects at low elevations between 119 and 461 m. It is dominated by <i>Juglans californica</i> in the tree layer and a variety of forbs and grasses in the herbaceous layer. |
