Abies grandis / Vaccinium membranaceum Rocky Mountain Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34213.CEGL000289
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This forest association occurs within the maritime-influenced climatic regions of the northern Rocky Mountains of Idaho and is centered in the Idaho Batholith and Blue Mountains ecoregional sections. Stands are located on moist, north- to east-facing slopes and benches at 1370-1980 m (4500-6500 feet) elevation. Loam soils are derived from basalt and granitic parent materials. The association represents the coolest extreme of sites with potential for <i>Abies grandis</i> establishment. <i>Pinus contorta, Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>, and <i>Picea engelmannii</i> are predominant seral species. <i>Vaccinium membranaceum</i> forms a patchy medium shrub sward. <i>Lonicera utahensis</i> is usually present and often well-represented. Relatively constant forbs include <i>Arnica cordifolia, Thalictrum occidentale, Carex rossii, Moehringia macrophylla, Chimaphila umbellata, Orthilia secunda</i>, and <i>Trillium ovatum</i>. The association is similar to ~<i>Abies grandis / Vaccinium membranaceum</i> Forest (CEGL000290)$$, which is described from the south-central Cascade Range and Blue, Ochoco, and Wallowa mountains. ~<i>Abies grandis / Vaccinium membranaceum</i> Rocky Mountain Forest (CEGL000289)$$ is the easternmost manifestation of <i>Abies grandis / Vaccinium membranaceum</i> communities. The association is differentiated on the basis of the dominance in the Rocky Mountain form of <i>Vaccinium membranaceum (= Vaccinium globulare)</i>.

Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda / Carex (sterilis, hystericina, flava) Shrub Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.24908.DASIPHORAFRUTIC
Eastern Ecology Working Group of...  0 Spring-fed herbaceous vegetation occurring on shallow peat and irrigated by base rich surface discharge or groundwater. Occurrences are generally small, local and restricted to a rather particular set of conditions. They are often on gentle slopes and in headwater positions. The community is comprised of a well-developed, very diverse herbaceous layer dominated by short cespitose sedges (Carex hystericina, Carex leptalea, Carex interior, Carex flava, Carex sterilis) and grasses such as Muhlenbergia glomerata, Glyceria striata and Bromus kalmii are common. Other characteristic herbs include Packera aurea (= Senecio aureus), Parnassia glauca, Solidago patula, Solidago uliginosa, Geum rivale, Equisetum spp., Spiranthes romanzoffiana, Symplocarpus foetidus, Drosera rotundifolia, Iris versicolor, Lobelia kalmii, Lycopus uniflorus, Thelypteris palustris, and Thalictrum pubescens. Many additional associated wetland species also occur. The bryophyte layer is well developed and comprised of bulky 'brown' mosses (Campylium stellatum, Drepanocladus revolvens, Calliergonella cuspidata, Aulacomnium palustre, Climacium spp., Tomentypnum nitens, Philonotis fontana, Bryum pseudotriquetrum, Scorpidium scorpioides). Shrubs are variable in cover and generally include Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Pentaphylloides floribunda), Rhamnus alnifolia, and Salix spp.
