This community is typically found on marly coastal sites in northern Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the United States and possibly Canada. These sites occupy embayments of open, sandy shorelines where limestone bedrock or cobble is at or near the surface. These sites have calcareous soils (with a pH as high as 8.2), resulting either from calcareous substrates, waterflow off adjacent limestone bedrock or limestone-rich till, or algal precipitation of calcium carbonate in the relatively warm, carbonate-saturated waters. These 'marly flats' contain a rich assemblage of calciphilic plants. Short shrubs dominate parts of these areas. Typical dominants include Myrica gale and Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Pentaphylloides floribunda), generally over 60% (?). Larix laricina and Salix pedicellaris are often present. The herbaceous layer is variable in cover and composition, sometimes shaded out by the heavy shrub cover. Species include Calamagrostis canadensis, Carex viridula, Carex lasiocarpa, and Cladium mariscoides. |

This community consists of pine-oak woodlands on sandy swamp islands isolated from fire, or on levees and creek banks where fire is limited. The open to closed canopy is dominated by <i>Pinus taeda</i> and <i>Quercus hemisphaerica</i>. The subcanopy includes <i>Osmanthus americanus var. americanus, Persea palustris, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Quercus nigra</i>, and <i>Quercus hemisphaerica</i>. The shrub layer is characteristically open, and dominated by <i>Ilex glabra</i>; other species may include <i>Vitis rotundifolia</i> and <i>Lyonia lucida</i>. In Florida, <i>Serenoa repens</i> is important. |

This forested association is a minor type in northwestern Oregon, eastern Idaho, northwestern Wyoming and southwestern Montana. It occurs on gentle to steep slopes, on any aspect in the Rocky Mountains, and limited to valley bottoms and north slopes in northeastern Oregon. Elevation ranges from 1585 to 2900 m (5200-9500 feet). Soils are shallow to deep, derived from sandstone, limestone or quartzite parent materials. The understory is dominated by forbs, and the shrub layer is depauperate. <i>Abies lasiocarpa</i> and <i>Picea engelmannii</i> are the overstory dominants, together or individually. <i>Pinus albicaulis, Pinus contorta, Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>, and <i>Larix occidentalis</i> may be present. This type is distinguished from similar associations by the higher cover of <i>Thalictrum occidentale</i>. <i>Arnica cordifolia</i> may also be is present in nearly all stands but has lower abundance on average. |
