This is a very specialized coastal prairie type, occupying low Pleistocene Prairie Terrace exposures within or adjacent to fresh marsh zones in the far southern range of coastal prairie in Louisiana. Very few examples remain, but the best of this type represents the highest quality remaining coastal prairie of any type in the state. The examples observed possess pimple mounds, and there are floristic differences between the mounds and intermound areas; however, this variation is lumped for now into a single type. The remnants of this type that have been observed support a broad diversity of species. It is unique in the prevalence of Spartina patens and other species when compared to other coastal prairie types. In addition to the nominals, some species present include Acmella oppositifolia var. repens (= Spilanthes americana), Agrostis hyemalis, Amsonia tabernaemontana, Andropogon glomeratus, Asclepias lanceolata, Asclepias viridis, Bacopa caroliniana, Centella erecta, Coelorachis rugosa, Coreopsis tinctoria, Cyperus cephalanthus (rarely), Eleocharis quadrangulata, Eriochloa punctata, Eupatorium serotinum, Eryngium yuccifolium, Fimbristylis littoralis (= Fimbristylis miliacea), Gaura lindheimeri, Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. lasiocarpos, Hydrolea ovata, Hyptis alata, Hymenocallis liriosme, Ipomoea sagittata, Iva angustifolia, Juncus roemerianus, Leersia hexandra, Lycopus rubellus, Lythrum lineare, Neptunia lutea, Oenothera drummondii, Panicum hemitomon, Panicum virgatum, Paspalum floridanum, Paspalum plicatulum, Polygala leptocaulis, Ratibida peduncularis, Rhexia mariana, Rhynchospora colorata, Rhynchospora globularis, Rhynchospora macrostachya, Rhynchospora microcarpa, Rhynchospora nitens, Rubus trivialis, Sabatia angularis, Solidago sempervirens var. mexicana, Tradescantia hirsutiflora, Tridens strictus, and Vernonia gigantea. The soils of this prairie type have not been closely analyzed. The coastal prairie zone of southwestern Louisiana has become very seriously infested with Triadica sebifera (= Sapium sebiferum) (Chinese tallow tree), which in many places has formed dense thickets and forests. It quickly comes to dominate fallow pastures and fields. Historically, upland coastal prairie was maintained by frequent burning and soil conditions generally inhospitable to the growth of trees and shrubs. |

Closed-canopy deciduous swamp forest of poorly drained depressions or seepage zones in the unglaciated portions of Lower New England/Northern Piedmont, High Allegheny Plateau, and Central Appalachians. This forest can occur as narrow zones to small inclusions to large swamps. Soils are generally mucky and without substantial peat development. It often occurs in areas of calcareous bedrock. The canopy is codominated by Acer rubrum and Fraxinus nigra with associates such as Betula alleghaniensis, Ulmus rubra, Ulmus americana, and Pinus strobus. The understory is patchy, ranging from shrub-dominated to sedge-dominated. Shrubs include Lindera benzoin, Toxicodendron vernix, Alnus incana, Salix spp., and Rhamnus alnifolia. The herb layer is diverse with Carex leptalea, Carex bromoides, Caltha palustris, Veratrum viride, Platanthera grandiflora, Geum rivale, Symplocarpus foetidus, Cypripedium reginae, Trollius laxus, Osmunda cinnamomea, Impatiens capensis, Cardamine bulbosa, Saxifraga pensylvanica, Dryopteris cristata, Carex lacustris, and Symplocarpus foetidus. |

Pinus banksiana - Populus tremuloides Forest Alliance » more details

This alliance, found in the extreme north-central United States and adjacent Canada, is composed of a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees, with the conifers tending to be more abundant in the north. The canopy is typically dominated by Pinus banksiana and Populus tremuloides with lesser amounts of Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, Picea glauca, and Picea mariana. Tree density and crown spacing may be moderately dense to dense, but sufficient light penetrates to permit the growth of a vigorous shrub layer. Most shrubs are less than 1 m tall. The most common among these are Corylus cornuta, Diervilla lonicera, Linnaea borealis, Rosa acicularis, Rubus pubescens, and Vaccinium spp. The herbaceous layer is also typically quite rich with species such as Aralia nudicaulis, Eurybia macrophylla (= Aster macrophyllus), Cornus canadensis, Clintonia borealis, Streptopus lanceolatus var. longipes (= Streptopus roseus), Trientalis borealis, and Viola spp. This alliance is found on generally level sandy outwash plains or moderately sloping moraines. The soils are fresh to dry, deep, sandy loams, loams, and fine sands. In Manitoba, the soils tend to be somewhat more moist and finer. |
