Salix wolfii / Carex utriculata Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.22946.SALIXWOLFIICARE
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 In Colorado, this riparian shrubland is an uncommon community of very wet subalpine sites on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. Salix wolfii grows in small patches with an herbaceous layer dominated by Carex utriculata, and does not form large, expansive willow carrs like Salix planifolia. Salix wolfii often forms a mosaic with stands of Salix planifolia, Salix brachycarpa, and open Carex spp. meadows. Information on stands outside Colorado will be added later.

Thuja occidentalis - Pinus banksiana / Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda / Clinopodium arkansanum Wooded Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.22310.THUJAOCCIDENTAL
Midwestern Ecology Working Group...  0 The white-cedar - jack pine / shrubby-cinquefoil alvar savanna type is found in the upper Great Lakes of the United States and Canada, primarily in Ontario, on Manitoulin Island and the Bruce Peninsula. Stands occur on shallow soils over flat limestone outcrops (pavements). This is sometimes a near-shore alvar community, occurring along and near the southern shore of Manitoulin Island and the western shore of the Bruce Peninsula. This is a savanna community with scattered trees forming an open canopy with 10-25% cover, and a variable understory with shrubby, grassy, and pavement patches. The most abundant trees are Thuja occidentalis and Pinus banksiana; Larix laricina is a common associate. This community has a fairly diverse shrub and herb layer. The most abundant shrubs are dwarf-shrubs (under 0.5 m tall), including Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Pentaphylloides floribunda) and Juniperus horizontalis. Characteristic herbs are similar to little bluestem alvar grassland, including Schizachyrium scoparium, Sporobolus heterolepis, Carex scirpoidea, Carex richardsonii, Carex eburnea, and Clinopodium arkansanum (= Calamintha arkansana).
