Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa - Acacia greggii - Celtis pallida / Paspalum setaceum - Urochloa ciliatissima Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35593.CEGL007786
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This woodland occurs on deep, sandy to loamy Alfisols on undulating uplands in the drier (more western) portions of the South Texas Sand Plain. Woody vegetation generally occurs in mottes covering a small percentage of any site. The ground layer is variable, depending on grazing pressure and season, with Urochloa ciliatissima (= Brachiaria ciliatissima), Cenchrus spinifex (= Cenchrus incertus), Eragrostis secundiflora, Eragrostis sessilispica, Chloris cucullata, Paspalum setaceum, Aristida purpurea (sensu lato), and Setaria spp. usually present; more palatable species such as Sporobolus cryptandrus and Vaseyochloa multinervosa may be locally common in areas of lighter grazing. A large number of annual forbs are present during wet periods (late winter-spring).

Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola - (Quercus virginiana, Sabal palmetto) Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36290.CEGL007813
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This association occupies marsh hammocks (small islands surrounded by tidal marsh) along the South Atlantic Coast from eastern North Carolina south through South Carolina and Georgia to northeastern Florida. Related vegetation along central Florida spring runs is also covered here for now. The canopy can be relatively open or completely closed. Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola typically dominates the canopy, while other species such as Quercus virginiana, Sabal palmetto, and Celtis laevigata var. laevigata may be present. This association is related to other associations in this alliance in the same geographic range but differs in being shorter in stature, coastal red-cedar-dominated, with fewer strata, and floristically depauperate (often with some marsh species present).

Quercus alba - Quercus (margarettiae, rubra, stellata) / Vaccinium pallidum Sandhill Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35342.CEGL007766
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This forest community occurs on deep sandy soils in fire-protected slopes and ravines of the South Atlantic Coastal Plain, associated with a matrix of sandhill longleaf pine woodlands and associated wetlands. Wetlands, relatively steep topography, and sandstone rock outcrops apparently provide fire protection. This community is dominated by a mix of oak and hickory species, including Quercus alba, Quercus rubra, Quercus stellata, Quercus margarettiae, Quercus coccinea, Quercus velutina, Carya glabra, Carya pallida, Carya alba, and Nyssa sylvatica. The shrub and woody-vine stratum is dominated by Vaccinium pallidum but also includes Calycanthus floridus, Viburnum acerifolium, Symplocos tinctoria, Kalmia latifolia, Smilax glauca, Prunus serotina var. serotina, Diospyros virginiana, Sassafras albidum, Clethra alnifolia, and Vitis rotundifolia. Herbs are few, including Dichanthelium commutatum, Hexastylis arifolia var. arifolia, Tephrosia virginiana, and Stylisma humistrata.

Celtis laevigata - Ulmus crassifolia - (Fraxinus berlandieriana) / Rivina humilis - Chromolaena odorata Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36081.CEGL007752
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This community occurs along the Rio Grande throughout the floodplain and delta region in southern Texas and adjacent Mexico. The canopy is dominated and characterized by Celtis laevigata var. laevigata, Ulmus crassifolia, and Fraxinus berlandieriana. Other canopy species include Sapindus saponaria var. drummondii, Leucaena pulverulenta, Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa, and Taxodium mucronatum. The subcanopy is often open to sparse, including Diospyros texana, Sideroxylon celastrinum, Xylosma flexuosa, and Acacia greggii var. wrightii (= Acacia wrightii). Lianas are Serjania brachycarpa, Cocculus diversifolius, Clematis drummondii, Urvillea ulmacea, and Cardiospermum halicacabum. The shrub layer is typically open and may include Heimia salicifolia. Epiphytes are typically abundant, including Tillandsia usneoides, Tillandsia recurvata, and (rarely) Tillandsia baileyi. Characteristic herbs and low shrubs are Rivina humilis, Chromolaena odorata (= Eupatorium odoratum), Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum, Malpighia glabra, Petiveria alliacea, Celosia nitida, Plumbago scandens, Achyranthes aspera, Solanum triquetrum, and Salvia coccinea.

Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa / Celtis pallida - Opuntia spp. Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35559.CEGL007756
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This Prosopis glandulosa woodland occurs on heavily utilized pastures on deep soils of broad valleys of the Rio Grande deltaic plain in southern Texas. This community is typically dominated by species that increase under heavy grazing or proliferate after root plowing such as Opuntia spp. Introduced grasses, such as Cynodon dactylon, Pennisetum ciliare var. ciliare (= Cenchrus ciliaris), and/or Dichanthium annulatum, generally dominate the herbaceous stratum. This community now occupies areas historically covered by a mosaic of native shrublands and grasslands.

Avicennia germinans / Batis maritima Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36310.CEGL007757
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This community occurs in saline to hypersaline tidal waters of low tidal amplitude along the southern coast of Texas and south into Tamaulipas. Avicennia germinans is the dominant shrub, usually from 0.5-3 m tall. Batis maritima forms a lower shrub layer, usually also extending outward from the Avicennia, and may form a small or extensive adjacent community.
