NatureServe Biotics 2019  16 This forest occurs in Georgia and Florida on fire-protected islands of high ground surrounded by riverine swamps, and on slopes and bluffs where protected from fire. The canopy consists of <i>Quercus hemisphaerica, Quercus geminata, Pinus taeda, Carya glabra</i>, and <i>Carya pallida</i>. The subcanopy typically includes substantial <i>Persea borbonia</i> and <i>Osmanthus americanus</i>, and occasionally <i>Magnolia virginiana</i>. Typical shrubs and woody vines include <i>Hamamelis virginiana, Serenoa repens, Vaccinium arboreum, Vaccinium elliottii, Bignonia capreolata, Symplocos tinctoria, Callicarpa americana, Gelsemium sempervirens</i>, and <i>Ilex vomitoria</i>. Herbs are sparse, but may include dense patches of <i>Carex dasycarpa</i>. <i>Pleopeltis polypodioides ssp. michauxiana</i> and <i>Tillandsia usneoides</i> are common epiphytes.

The emergent tree layer is generally absent but may include <i>Quercus agrifolia</i>.
