» more details
accession code: VB.CC.37197.CEGL008508
Fleming, G. P., and P. P. Coulli... 0 This community type is known from scattered localities along nearly the full length of the Blue Ridge in Virginia and could potentially occur in North Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. This vegetation type is associated with medium- to high-elevation exposed outcrops of igneous and metamorphic rocks, including metabasalt (greenstone), porphyritic leucocharnockite, amphibolite, and rhyolite. Elevation ranges from about 880 to 1400 m (2900-4600 feet). Habitats are typically on strongly convex, upper slopes and rocky summits with west to northwest or flat aspects. The community is a patchwork of shrub thickets, small herbaceous mats, and exposed, lichen-covered rock surfaces. Photinia melanocarpa (= Aronia melanocarpa) is the dominant shrub, or is codominant with Gaylussacia baccata, Hamamelis virginiana, Smilax tamnoides, and/or Kalmia latifolia. Minor woody components include Sorbus americana, Rhododendron catawbiense, and Menziesia pilosa, as well as severely stunted Betula alleghaniensis and Quercus rubra.

Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 These temporarily flooded riparian shrublands are found in the United States in the southern end of the Ridge and Valley province of Alabama. Stands occur near moderately sized rivers, on bedrock and cobble of dolomite. This community is maintained by flashy, high-velocity flows. These shrublands are of modest stature (1-3 m [3-10 feet]). The dominant shrubs are Alnus serrulata and Hypericum densiflorum var. interior. Associated shrubs and scattered short trees include Betula nigra, Catalpa bignonioides, Cephalanthus occidentalis, Cornus amomum, Diospyros virginiana, Itea virginica, Platanus occidentalis, Salix caroliniana, and Ulmus rubra. Typical species in the herbaceous layer include Anemone virginiana, Commelina virginica, Conoclinium coelestinum (= Eupatorium coelestinum), Elephantopus carolinianus, Helenium autumnale, Hydrocotyle sp., Ludwigia leptocarpa, Lycopus sp., Orontium aquaticum, Oxypolis rigidior, Phlox carolina, Rhynchospora colorata (= Dichromena colorata), Rudbeckia laciniata, Tripsacum dactyloides, and Vernonia gigantea.

Quercus chrysolepis / Dryopteris arguta Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32563.CEGL008603
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This forest association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this forest are found at low elevations (823-1372 m [2700-4500 feet]) on the mid to upper portions of linear, concave, and undulating, southwest- to north-facing, moderate to steep (15-40°) slopes. Soils tend to be poorly developed with some exposed bedrock, large rocks, and small rocks. Soil textures are usually sandy loam but range from sandy loam to loam and are of igneous, granitic parent material. Drainage is somewhat poor to rapidly draining. Litter ranges from 40-77% cover. Disturbance at these sites tends to be low.

Abrahamson, W. G., A. F. Johnson... 0 This Panicum abscissum-dominated swale community is found in central Florida on the Lake Wales Ridge where it occurs in a matrix of scrub and flatwoods vegetation. Panicum abscissum forms a dense, almost monospecific turf, with a scattering of various other wetland herbs and shrubs.

Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana - Celtis tenuifolia - Cercis canadensis / Sporobolus clandestinus - Danthonia sericea Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36286.CEGL008499
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This association represents a woodland found on linear outcrops of rich granite in the upper Piedmont of Georgia. Stands are dominated by an unusual canopy/subcanopy mixture of Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana, Celtis tenuifolia, Ulmus alata, Pinus echinata, and Cercis canadensis. This vegetation apparently occurs in nutrient-rich soils derived from base-rich granite. More information is needed on the characteristics of the particular substrate on which this vegetation is found. Stands are known from moderate elevations of from 300-360 m (1000-1200 feet) in the upper Piedmont of Georgia, and possibly related areas of Alabama and South Carolina. Shrubs include Prunus umbellata, Yucca filamentosa, and Hypericum hypericoides ssp. hypericoides. Woody vines include Bignonia capreolata. Typical species of the herb stratum include Sporobolus compositus, Danthonia sericea (both of these with higher cover values), Cheilanthes lanosa, Cheilanthes tomentosa, Acalypha sp. Carex nigromarginata, Commelina erecta, Dichanthelium depauperatum, Erigeron strigosus, Galactia regularis, Juncus acuminatus, Liatris squarrosa, Manfreda virginica, Melica mutica, Nuttallanthus canadensis, Salvia azurea, Scleria oligantha, Selaginella rupestris, Setaria parviflora, Talinum teretifolium, and Tragia urticifolia.

Carex aquatilis - Dulichium arundinaceum Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.37203.CEGL008542
Fleming, G. P., and P. P. Coulli... 0 This community is known from a single site (Green Pond) at Big Levels in Augusta County, Virginia. Green Pond is a 0.4-hectare (one acre) natural ridge crest depression located at 976 m (3203 feet) elevation on the summit of the Blue Ridge. It is situated where the local, ridge-forming Antietam quartzite has weathered through to the predominantly carbonate Shady Formation. The pond retains shallow water continuously in most years and has a dense substrate of reddish, poorly-decomposed, root-rich peat. The vegetation of Green Pond is a floristically depauperate herbaceous wetland dominated by Carex aquatilis and, to a lesser extent, by Dulichium arundinaceum. The only other species occurring here are Vaccinium macrocarpon, Juncus canadensis, Triadenum virginicum, a few seedlings of Cephalanthus occidentalis, and an unidentified Utricularia sp.
