Alnus rhombifolia / Prunus virginiana Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34279.CEGL000635
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This riparian plant association is reported from data collected in the Snake and Salmon river corridors, within the Blue Mountains ecoregional section. The association occurs on stable stream channels within an elevational band of 595 to 715 m (1950-2350 feet), in the deeply incised terrain of the Salmon River Canyon. Stands of the forest plant association are dominated by broad-leaved, deciduous tree species. Alnus rhombifolia is codominant with Prunus virginiana. Dispersed individuals of Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa are also present. Philadelphus lewisii, Sambucus caerulea, Crataegus douglasii, Acer glabrum, Ribes oxyacanthoides ssp. irriguum (= Ribes irriguum), Lonicera utahensis and Holodiscus discolor are often associates of the broad-leaved deciduous shrub understory. Characteristic forbs include Galium aparine, Claytonia perfoliata (= Montia perfoliata), Stellaria media, Dryopteris filix-mas, Claytonia sibirica (= Montia sibirica), Maianthemum stellatum, Fragaria vesca, and Adenocaulon bicolor.

Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis / Hesperostipa comata Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34139.CEGL001051
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This plant association is from the Columbia River Basin of Oregon and Washington (Columbia Basin and western portion of the Okanogan Highlands ecoregional sections) and the Snake River Plain (Owyhee Uplands and Snake River Basalts ecoregional sections) in Idaho. The association is restricted to sandy loam or uniformly high calcareous silt loam soils which receive approximately 8-12 inches precipitation annually. Stands are dominated by Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis. Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides) and Elymus elymoides are consistently present with Hesperostipa comata (= Stipa comata). Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus is commonly associated.

Fraxinus latifolia - Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa / Symphoricarpos albus Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33512.CEGL000641
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 From Kunze (1994): This community type occurs along the Columbia River above Longview, Washington, as well as along other major streams and rivers in the southern Puget Trough and Willamette Valley, Oregon. It occupies drier, slightly higher portions of floodplain terraces and natural levees along river channels. Stands appear to be located above the bottomlands that would have been flooded for prolonged periods prior to flood control dams. Soils are silt-loams. Subirrigation is probably minor. The relative dominance of Fraxinus latifolia and Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa (= Populus trichocarpa) is highly variable in this community type. Symphoricarpos albus is the dominant shrub species. In most stands, the understory has been degraded by grazing and introduced Phalaris arundinacea making it difficult to determine the original understory. All stands are second-growth, except for a few scattered individual old-growth trees.

Areces-Mallea, A. E., A. S. Weak... 0 These are successional forests. Stands contain Cecropia schreberiana. In Puerto Rico other associated species include Andira inermis, Acrocomia aculeata, Erythrina poeppigiana, Schefflera morototonii (= Didymopanax morototonii), Casearia spp., and Ochroma pyramidale.

Platanus wrightii - Juglans major Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32912.CEGL000645
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This riparian forest is found along perennial and seasonally intermittent streams in the foothills zone of isolated desert mountain ranges in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Stands occur in narrow stream valleys and on gently sloping alluvial terraces. Elevations range from 1240-1700 m. This association requires reliable surface flow during the winter-spring months, is periodically inundated during spring runoff and generally occurs along small, perennial streams. The Gray Ranch stand in southwestern New Mexico occurs on gravelly alluvium deposited among boulders derived from rhyolite alluvium parent material. These depositional soils are silty loam in texture. The tree canopy is codominated by the broad-leaved trees Platanus wrightii and Juglans major. Total canopy cover is over 70%, and is usually composed of a few large Platanus wrightii dominating the stand, with larger numbers of smaller Juglans major trees. Height of the canopy is typically 18-23 m. Other broad-leaved deciduous trees that may be present in some stands include Fraxinus velutina, Populus angustifolia, and Alnus oblongifolia. The understory has a sparse shrubby layer, with less than 10% total cover composed of saplings of Platanus and Juglans spp., and a highly variable mix of shrub species that may include Baccharis salicifolia, Rhus microphylla, and Chilopsis linearis. The sparse to moderately dense herbaceous layer may have high species diversity. At Gray Ranch, NM, the most abundant herbaceous species are the perennial grasses Bouteloua curtipendula (15% cover) and Setaria grisebachii (10% cover). Other grasses that may occur include Leptochloa dubia, Muhlenbergia spp., Elymus elymoides, and Elymus glaucus. Forbs are sparse, with less than 5% cover.

Populus angustifolia / Acer grandidentatum Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32634.CEGL000646
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This plant association occurs on gently to moderately sloping stream terraces at elevations between 1500 and 2000 m. The overstory is usually dominated by Populus angustifolia with occasional codominance by Acer negundo. Acer grandidentatum creates a low tree layer. Shrubs are typically sparse and may include Mahonia repens, Paxistima myrsinites, or Symphoricarpos oreophilus. Herbaceous cover is variable and common species include Osmorhiza berteroi (= Osmorhiza chilensis), Maianthemum stellatum (= Smilacina stellata), Elymus glaucus, and the exotic grass Poa pratensis.
