Pinus edulis - Juniperus spp. / Poa fendleriana Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32027.CEGL000787
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This association is widespread and common throughout the Colorado Plateau of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. It occurs on the slopes of canyons, ridges, toeslopes, alluvial fans, benches and plateaus at elevations ranging from 1525 to 2560 m (5000-8400 feet). Stands may occur on slopes ranging from 7 to 48% that are oriented to any aspect. Most stands are on sandy soils, with a few on silt loam or clay loam soils derived from sedimentary, granitic or metamorphic rocks. Total vegetation cover ranges from 40% to more than 75%. This woodland association is characterized by an open to moderately closed, mixed canopy of Pinus edulis and Juniperus osteosperma 2-10 m tall. In the southern part of the range, Juniperus monosperma and Juniperus scopulorum may be present in the canopy. The understory is dominated by the bunchgrass Poa fendleriana with between 1 and 25% cover. Scattered shrubs fail to form a stratum but may include Amelanchier utahensis, Artemisia nova, Cercocarpus montanus, Ephedra viridis, Quercus gambelii, Purshia tridentata, Yucca baccata, Opuntia spp., Symphoricarpos oreophilus, Fallugia paradoxa, and Fendlera rupicola. Other common herbaceous species (always with less cover than Poa fendleriana) include Achnatherum hymenoides, Koeleria macrantha, Muhlenbergia montana, Blepharoneuron tricholepis, Pascopyrum smithii, Bouteloua gracilis, Balsamorhiza sagittata, Mirabilis multiflora, Penstemon linarioides, and Petradoria pumila.

Pinus jeffreyi / Ceanothus pumilus Wooded Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33057.CEGL000816
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This community is found in the Klamath-Siskiyou region of Oregon and California. Sites include a variety of slopes (0-45%) and all aspects except east. Elevations range from 360-1180 m (1180-3860 feet) in Oregon and 1390-1630 m (4560-5340 feet) in California. Exposed rocks and clay soils are typical with serpentine and peridotite parent material. An open overstory with a good variety of tree species, sizes, and heights over a sparsely vegetated understory is typical. Pinus jeffreyi dominates the open tree canopy with average cover of 10-25%. Calocedrus decurrens is also present and supports 5-10% cover. The dwarf-shrub layer is codominated by Ceanothus pumilus (= Ceanothus prostratus ssp. pumilus) with 8-29% cover (although due to its stature of less than 10 cm in height, it appears more like an herbaceous layer). Arctostaphylos canescens and Arctostaphylos viscida are also very abundant. The herbaceous layer is dominated by the perennial grasses, Achnatherum lemmonii (= Stipa lemmonii) and Festuca roemeri at many sites with 50% and 32% cover, respectively. Total forb cover averages 13% and is dominated by Horkelia sericata (11% cover).

Pinus engelmannii / Muhlenbergia longiligula Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33238.CEGL000799
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This highly diverse "Madrean" woodland association is restricted to the isolated "sky island" mountain ranges of southern Arizona and northern Mexico and possibly occur in the Animas Mountains of southwestern New Mexico. In the U.S., it is known only from the Canelo Hills plus the Santa Rita and the Chiricahua mountains, but it may be more prevalent in Mexico. This association occurs on moderate to steep slopes of northerly aspects or on benches. Elevations range from 1700-2100 m (5560-6900 feet), and sites are warm and dry. The association is characterized by an open canopy of Pinus engelmannii with Pinus cembroides, Pinus edulis, or Juniperus deppeana in the understory. Quercus emoryi, Quercus arizonica, or Quercus gambelii may be common to well-represented as shrubs. The herb layer is characteristically grassy, with Muhlenbergia longiligula well-represented and dominant. Muhlenbergia emersleyi and Panicum bulbosum may also be well-represented, but the remainder of the herbs are sparse and scattered.

Pinus flexilis / Festuca campestris Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33231.CEGL000806
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This is a somewhat circumscribed community found in the northern Rocky Mountains from central Montana to southwestern Alberta on dry and often wind-swept slopes. Typically stands are small patches, but some on the Rocky Mountain Front foothills and western extremity of the northwestern Great Plains are extensive. The documented elevation range is from 1400 m (4600 feet) in the Rocky Mountain Front foothills to 1830 m (6000 feet) within the Lewis Range; reconnaissance within this range has placed stands at considerably higher elevations (these sites often occur on west- to southwest-facing slopes impacted by prevailing winds). Though not restricted to calcareous substrates, it frequently occurs on such owing to extensive exposures of Madison limestone within the type's distribution. Substrates are always excessively drained and gravelly with textures ranging from silts to sandy loams. Ground cover is dominated by litter, but moderate amounts of rock (15%) and soil (10%) are found. Tree canopy structure ranges from very open (15-20% cover) to approaching 60% cover. Though Pinus flexilis is usually dominant, Pseudotsuga menziesii is invariably present and not infrequently shares canopy dominance with Pinus flexilis. Pinus ponderosa and Pinus contorta occur in a small fraction of the stands and usually as minor components. With the exception of locally high coverages of Juniperus horizontalis, shrubs are generally a minor component, with those of highest constancy being Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Shepherdia canadensis, Juniperus communis, Artemisia frigida, and Amelanchier alnifolia. The herbaceous layer is bunchgrass dominated, with Festuca campestris and Festuca idahoensis about equally abundant in stands with well-regulated grazing and Pseudoroegneria spicata and Koeleria macrantha having considerable cover in particular circumstances. Forbs comprise a minor component, with Allium cernuum, Galium boreale, Achillea millefolium, Lithospermum ruderale, and Balsamorhiza sagittata exhibiting the highest constancy; the last three species sporadically occur with greater than 10% cover. In the case of Achillea millefolium, over-grazing is frequently the cause.

Pinus jeffreyi / Festuca roemeri Wooded Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31970.CEGL000817
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This association has a typically park-like appearance of mostly mature pines scattered sparsely over a continuous grassland, occasionally supporting shrub patches. Stands occur at elevations of 530-1980 m (1740-6490 feet) with variable aspects and slopes of 3-48%. Soils are shallow (<25 cm depth) and derived from serpentine parent material. The vegetation is a very open-canopied woodland/savanna with dense grass cover. Pinus jeffreyi is the only overstory tree species represented at most sites and averages 21% cover. Pinus jeffreyi, Calocedrus decurrens, and Pseudotsuga menziesii are commonly in the understory with 8%, 10%, and 4% cover, respectively. Shrubs may be locally abundant, such as Ceanothus cuneatus (37%) and Arctostaphylos canescens (38%). The graminoid layer is dominated by Festuca roemeri with 55% cover. An important forb, Achillea millefolium, averages 12% cover.
