This community is found in the central United States along upper floodplain terraces of rivers and streams and in upland ravine bottoms. Soils are moderately well-drained to poorly drained. Tree canopies are dominated by Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Celtis occidentalis, and Ulmus americana. Other tree species that may be present include Juglans nigra, Tilia americana, Acer saccharinum, Populus deltoides. Ulmus rubra can be part of the subcanopy. The shrub layer in the western part of the range includes Cornus drummondii, Ribes missouriense, Symphoricarpos occidentalis, and Zanthoxylum americanum, as well as woody vines, such as Parthenocissus vitacea, Smilax tamnoides (= Smilax hispida), Toxicodendron radicans, and Vitis riparia. The herbaceous layer in the western part of its range includes Elymus virginicus, Festuca subverticillata, Galium aparine, Geum canadense, and Laportea canadensis. |

This cottonwood - willow woodland is found on floodplains near the lower Missouri River and its tributaries in the western tallgrass prairie region of the United States. The water table may be at or near the surface for parts of the year, with spring floods possible. Soils of this community are deep sandy loam to sand and somewhat poorly drained. The parent material is alluvium. In this floodplain woodland, the overstory is composed of medium to tall trees, including Acer negundo, Carya illinoinensis, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Populus deltoides, Quercus palustris, Salix nigra, and Ulmus americana. The ground layer consists of tall and mid grasses and forbs. Andropogon gerardii, Panicum virgatum, and Spartina pectinata are commonly present in the ground layer. Ground layer species of this community are also typical of wet-mesic and wet prairie. |

This association is broadly defined to encompass the range of variation present in Pinus elliottii var. elliottii flatwoods ranging from Mississippi to South Carolina. This type is currently best known in Florida where it occurs in the panhandle (on Eglin Air Force Base), South Atlantic Coast (Osceola National Forest), and peninsula (Ocala National Forest). Pinus elliottii var. elliottii dominates the generally open canopy. Pinus palustris or Gordonia lasianthus and Pinus serotina can be present, even codominant. The dense shrub stratum consists primarily of Ilex glabra and Serenoa repens. The most common vine is Smilax laurifolia. The herbaceous flora is generally sparse or patchy. |

This cottonwood - black willow - silver maple forest is characteristic of the fronts and banks of most major rivers and large streams throughout the Central Forest Region, extending into the northern forest particularly within the Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri River systems. It develops on bare, moist soil on recently formed sand bars, front-land ridges, and well-drained flats, along with Salix interior, Eragrostis hypnoides, Leptochloa panicea ssp. brachiata (= Leptochloa filiformis), Lipocarpha micrantha (= Hemicarpha micrantha), Rumex maritimus, Potentilla paradoxa, and Bidens spp. This natural community can also be found well-drained ridges in the first bottoms. Soils are formed in alluvium, are deep, medium-textured, and with adequate or excessive moisture available for vegetation during the growing season. The tree canopy is tall (to 30 m) and dominated by Populus deltoides, Salix nigra, and Acer saccharinum, although Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Acer negundo, Platanus occidentalis, and Ulmus americana are also commonly encountered. Tree diversity is limited due to the dynamics of flooding and resultant deposition and scouring of sediments. In earlier successional stages, the subcanopy can be strongly dominated by Salix nigra. The shrub layer is conspicuously absent in many parts of the range. Herbaceous growth can be thick and lush but is often patchy and sparse due to frequent inundation. Species most often encountered in the ground layer include Carex spp., Leersia oryzoides, Bidens spp., and Asteraceae spp. |

This association is an early seral type on floodplains and outwash plains of southeastern Alaska. It is primarily found on newly exposed, well-drained gravel on young proximal outwash and floodplains. River flooding is rare within most of these stands. This association is codominated in the overstory by Picea sitchensis and Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa (= Populus trichocarpa). Common shrubs include Oplopanax horridus (= Echinopanax horridus), Vaccinium ovalifolium, and Rubus pedatus. Herbaceous cover is sparse and includes Tiarella trifoliata and Athyrium filix-femina. It is distinct from other Picea sitchensis-dominated communities in that Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa occurs as an overstory codominant, and Oplopanax horridus dominates the understory. |
