Midwestern Ecology Working Group...  0 This community type is found in the northern tallgrass prairie region of the upper midwestern United States and adjacent Canada. Stands occur on rolling to moderately sloping sites on glacial till or outwash. The soils range from clay loam to sandy loam. This community is characterized by scattered mature trees in a graminoid-dominated matrix. <i>Quercus macrocarpa</i> is the most abundant tree, although <i>Populus tremuloides</i> can be a common invader on northern sites. The herbaceous layer is dominated by <i>Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans</i>, and <i>Sporobolus heterolepis</i>. <i>Schizachyrium scoparium</i> and <i>Hesperostipa spartea (= Stipa spartea)</i> are often found in drier areas and <i>Panicum virgatum</i> can be common in wetter patches. The shrub layer is variable and contains species such as <i>Amelanchier</i> spp., <i>Corylus americana, Cornus foemina, Prunus virginiana, Salix humilis</i>, and <i>Symphoricarpos occidentalis</i>.

Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This community is a subtropical, evergreen shrubland dominated by tall, thorny shrubs, 3-4 m tall. Important species include <i>Ebenopsis ebano (= Pithecellobium ebano), Phaulothamnus spinescens, Sideroxylon celastrinum, Condalia hookeri, Ziziphus obtusifolia, Zanthoxylum fagara, Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa, Celtis pallida, Ehretia anacua, Karwinskia humboldtiana, Citharexylum berlandieri</i>, and <i>Adelia vaseyi</i>. This shrubland occurs over clayey soils on river levees, resaca banks, and elsewhere in the Holocene floodplain of the lower Rio Grande in the southernmost portion of Texas. It also potentially occurs in adjacent areas of Mexico.

Stands occur along the upper portions of river valleys slopes, ravines, and moraine hills. In North Dakota, this community occurs on nearly level to hilly glacial till uplands along the edge of the Turtle Mountains. The tree canopy of this community is open, with individual or clumped <i>Quercus macrocarpa</i> trees and scattered shrubs in a matrix of graminoid-dominated understory. Common shrubs include <i>Symphoricarpos occidentalis</i> and <i>Prunus virginiana</i>. Frequent grasses include <i>Elymus canadensis, Nassella viridula, Pascopyrum smithii, Elymus caninus (= Agropyron caninum)</i>, and <i>Muhlenbergia racemosa</i>. Forbs may include <i>Anemone canadensis, Anemone cylindrica, Heuchera richardsonii, Vicia americana, Asclepias verticillata</i>, and <i>Galium boreale</i>.
