accession code: VB.CC.34631.CEGL000918
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This plant association is restricted to upper elevations above 3020 m (9900 feet) of the Mogollon Mountains in southwestern New Mexico and is reported from mountains in Arizona. It occurs on steep slopes with cobbly soils derived from talus. Abies lasiocarpa is the dominant in association with Pseudotsuga menziesii and occasionally Pinus strobiformis. The understory is distinctly shrubby and dominated by Holodiscus dumosus, Symphoricarpos oreophilus, and Juniperus communis. The herbaceous layer is poorly represented.

Abies lasiocarpa - Picea engelmannii / Juniperus communis Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31947.CEGL000919
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This spruce-fir woodland association occurs in localized areas within the subalpine to upper montane zones of the western United States. The primary elevation range for the association is between 2530 and 3200 m (8300-11,500 feet). It occurs on gentle to somewhat steep mid- to upper slopes of all aspects and on benches or at lower elevations on dry stream terraces with cold-air drainage. Soils are variable but generally rocky and well-drained with substantial areas of lichen-covered bedrock or bare soil. This association is among the driest types of Abies lasiocarpa forests and woodlands. The canopy is relatively open and dominated by Abies lasiocarpa with Picea engelmannii often codominant. Seral species in the tree canopy can include Pinus contorta, Pinus flexilis, Picea pungens, and Populus tremuloides, with Pseudotsuga menziesii occurring on relatively warmer sites. The shrub layer is often sparse but characterized by large, widely spaced patches of Juniperus communis. Additional shrub species occur and can include Shepherdia canadensis, Vaccinium scoparium, Ribes montigenum, Symphoricarpos oreophilus, and occasionally Mahonia repens, Vaccinium myrtillus, or Vaccinium caespitosum. The herbaceous layer is likewise sparse. Species occurring most frequently include Arnica cordifolia, Lupinus argenteus, Fragaria virginiana, Chamerion angustifolium (= Epilobium angustifolium), and Antennaria spp. Diagnostic characteristics of this association include Abies lasiocarpa and Picea engelmannii in the tree canopy and Juniperus communis patches in the understory with greater cover than other shrub species.

Danthonia californica - Festuca rubra Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33953.CEGL001597
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 A perennial grassland dominated by Danthonia californica and Festuca rubra. Diagnostic species include Deschampsia holciformis (= Deschampsia cespitosa ssp. holciformis) and Calamagrostis nutkaensis. This association occurs along the coastal regions of California and Oregon with cool, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Formerly fairly widespread, this association formed a finely textured mosaic with forest, scrub and other grassland types. Invading exotics and extensive grazing have degraded this association throughout its range, reducing it to a handful of occurrences.

Populus angustifolia - Picea pungens / Alnus incana Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32637.CEGL000934
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This plant association is a common riparian woodland in Colorado. Elevation ranges from roughly 1950-2925 m (6400-9600 feet). Stands occur along moderate-sized meandering streams and rivers in narrow to moderately wide mountain valleys and deep canyons with moderate stream gradients. It occurs on floodplains, active channel margins, and stream terraces. The shallow soils are derived from cobbly alluvium. Stands have an open to moderately dense (20-60% cover), mixed deciduous-evergreen tree canopy with Populus angustifolia and Picea pungens codominant. Frequently, other conifer trees are present, but not as abundant as Picea pungens. The shrub understory is typically dense and diverse. Alnus incana is always present. The moderate herbaceous layer is diverse, provides up to 30% cover, and is dominated by various graminoids with low cover of often diverse forbs.
