This shrubland occupies deeper soils in dolostone glades associated with the Cahaba River in Bibb County, Alabama. It occurs as islands in herbaceous dominated areas, and as a narrow to wide (5-30 m wide) marginal zone. Characteristic shrubs are Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana, Rhus aromatica var. aromatica, Croton alabamensis var. alabamensis, Frangula caroliniana, Forestiera ligustrina, Leptopus phyllanthoides (= Andrachne phyllanthoides), Berchemia scandens, Hypericum frondosum, Sideroxylon lycioides, and stunted individuals of Acer leucoderme, Quercus muehlenbergii, Quercus austrina, Fraxinus americana, and Ulmus alata. Carex eburnea is a characteristic herb, which is present primarily in this community and is not as common in associated woodlands or herbaceous types. |

This shrubland occurs on ridges, benches and mesas in the northern Colorado Plateau and western slope of the southern Rocky Mountains. Stands occur in somewhat isolated upland patches in western Colorado and in southwestern Wyoming. Slopes range from level to moderate and occur between 2300 and 2675 m (7545-8776 feet) elevation. Soils are derived from a wide variety of substrates; textures vary accordingly from clays to sandy loams. Biological soil crusts may be present but rarely have significant cover. Total vegetation cover ranges from 25 to nearly 100%. The vegetation is characterized by a shrub canopy of Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana (15-75%), often associated with Amelanchier utahensis, Symphoricarpos oreophilus, and Purshia tridentata. The herbaceous understory is dominated by Balsamorhiza sagittata and other forbs, including Phlox spp., Eriogonum umbellatum, Castilleja linariifolia, Senecio integerrimus, Arenaria congesta, and Crepis acuminata. Total herbaceous cover ranges from 10 to 30%. Grasses vary among sites and may include Poa fendleriana, Poa secunda, Hesperostipa comata, Pseudoroegneria spicata, Achnatherum pinetorum, Achnatherum lettermanii, and Pascopyrum smithii. Scattered Juniperus osteosperma may be present, but pinyon or juniper trees appear not to threaten stands on high slopes and ridgetops because of their relatively thin soils. Fire tends to convert these sites to grasslands dominated by the herbaceous species present before the burn. |

This mesic sagebrush association occurs in upland areas where snow accumulates, including swales and valley bottoms. Documented stands are known from Wyoming, Montana and northern and western Colorado. Elevations range from 2200 to 2500 m (7200-8200 feet). Sites are level to gently sloping and may be oriented to any aspect. Soils may be derived from eolian sediments, sandstone or shale, and often have a silty loam or clay loam texture. The amount of litter on the ground surface is inversely proportional to the intensity of grazing. Total vegetation cover ranges from a low of around 20% to approximately 75%. Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana dominates the shrub layer with 10 to 50% cover, and Pascopyrum smithii dominates a diverse herbaceous layer. Other shrubs comprise a minority of the shrub canopy, including Symphoricarpos oreophilus, Amelanchier utahensis, Purshia tridentata, Ericameria nauseosa, Tetradymia canescens, Krascheninnikovia lanata, and Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus. The grass component of the understory is often diverse and may include a combination of Poa fendleriana, Achnatherum pinetorum, Achnatherum hymenoides, Bouteloua gracilis, Elymus lanceolatus, Leymus cinereus, Hesperostipa comata, Elymus elymoides, and Poa secunda. Forbs such as Artemisia frigida, Achillea millefolium, and Phlox hoodii ssp. muscoides (= Phlox bryoides) generally contribute little cover. |

This sagebrush shrubland occurs on all exposures except southerly sites. It appears to be limited to above 1830 m (6000 feet) elevation, ranging from 1935 to 2290 m (6350-7500 feet). Slopes range from 0-30%. Soils are derived from acidic igneous and basaltic parent materials. Textures range from gravelly loam to gravelly clay loam to finer silt loams with fewer fragments. Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana is the dominant shrub species, ranging from 3 to 40% canopy cover. Symphoricarpos oreophilus is often present and occasionally replaced by Prunus virginiana or Ribes cereum. Other shrubs that may be present include Purshia tridentata and Amelanchier alnifolia. Herbaceous cover ranges from 20 to 70% and is dominated by Festuca idahoensis. Other common or high-constancy species include Poa pratensis, Melica bulbosa, Koeleria macrantha, Lupinus sericeus, Geranium viscosissimum, Eriogonum umbellatum, Balsamorhiza sagittata, and Helianthella uniflora. Presence of Achnatherum nelsonii ssp. dorei (= Stipa columbiana) or Achnatherum lettermanii (= Stipa lettermanii) are indications of past disturbance. |
