Festuca idahoensis - Pascopyrum smithii Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33681.CEGL001621
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 Festuca idahoensis - Pascopyrum smithii Herbaceous Vegetation occurs primarily east of the Continental Divide on gentle slopes. It is found on moderately deep soils of sedimentary origin, generally from 1200-1800 m elevation, but may be found up to 2400 m. Festuca idahoensis is the dominant graminoid, but wheatgrasses including Pascopyrum smithii and/or Elymus lanceolatus may be abundant. Pascopyrum smithii appears to become restricted in distribution to the north. In Alberta, it is restricted to swales or to specific soil types and Elymus lanceolatus becomes the prominent wheatgrass. Koeleria macrantha is also an important component of this type. Poa cusickii is often conspicuous; growing with or replacing Poa secunda (= Poa sandbergii). Graminoids are far more abundant than shrubs and forbs. The most prominent forbs are Phlox hoodii, Gaillardia aristata, Antennaria rosea, and Achillea millefolium. The short shrub Artemisia frigida may be present. Other shrubs are absent or scattered.

Festuca roemeri - Phlox diffusa ssp. longistylis Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31117.CEGL001622
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This grassland association is described from rain shadow-affected areas near and above treeline in the northeastern Olympic Mountains, Washington. Elevation ranges from 1570-1690 m. Sites are typically on mesic, moderate slopes (20-25°) with relatively warm south to west exposures. Soils are acidic, relatively deep, poorly developed sandy loams. This association is a moderately dense (73%cover) mixed graminoid/forb herbaceous layer less than 0.5 m tall that is codominated by Festuca idahoensis with Phlox diffusa ssp. longistylis. Other common species include Arenaria capillaris, Campanula rotundifolia, Polygonum bistortoides, and Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus (= Lupinus latifolius var. subalpinus). Occasional trees may be scattered in these stands, such as individuals of Abies lasiocarpa. Stands are separated from other high-elevation Festuca idahoensis stands by the codominance of Phlox diffusa ssp. longistylis.

EcoArt 2002 0 Wetland vegetation that develops following blowdowns, clearcut logging, thermal pollution, and possibly other disturbance, dominated by the nominal species. Other species that may be present include ~Polygonum$ spp., ~Cyperus$ spp., ~Toxicodendron radicans ssp. radicans, Salix$ spp., and ~Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera)$. This alliance potentially is widespread and occurs throughout the Coastal Plain.

Festuca idahoensis - Pseudoroegneria spicata Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33853.CEGL001624
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This mid-grassland is abundant in western Montana, southern Idaho and eastern Washington near the Snake River. It also occurs in northeastern California. It occurs at 900 to 2300 m (2950-7500 feet) elevation, on mostly gently rolling to flat topography, but can be found on relatively steep slopes as well. It tends to occur more on northerly exposures at the lower elevations and on southerly exposures at the higher elevations. The vegetation is characterized by the presence and dominance of Festuca idahoensis and Pseudoroegneria spicata (= Agropyron spicata) and usually Poa secunda (= Poa sandbergii). Cover ranges from 5-60% for each species, and their combined cover is usually much greater than any forb component present. Commonly associated graminoid species include Carex filifolia, Danthonia intermedia, Leymus cinereus (= Elymus cinereus), Poa cusickii, Koeleria macrantha, Hesperostipa comata and Achnatherum occidentale (= Stipa occidentalis). Forb species composition varies, depending on aspect and geographic distribution. Total forb cover ranges from 3 to 33%. Common forb species include Achillea millefolium, Antennaria rosea, Lupinus sericeus, Arenaria congesta, Lithophragma glabrum (= Lithophragma bulbiferum), and Phlox hoodii. Scattered low-stature shrubs may be present and include Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Ericameria nauseosa, and Artemisia tridentata.
